This is a one-day clinic for the safe and effective use of a pontoon boat on moving water.  The Clinic Lead is Lance Gray of Lance Gray and Company and the Clinic will be held on the Feather River near Oroville, CA on Saturday, October 26, 2024 starting at 8:00 AM.

The main focus of this clinic is the safe use of a pontoon boat on moving water.  All participants will need to complete Lance's Confirmation Package and sign a liability waiver before participating.  This will be provided to you in advance.  Of course, you'll need a suitable pontoon boat with a pump, oars, repair kit, a PFD, waders and wading belt, a wading staff, steelhead fishing gear, and other equipment including water and snacks.  A cold lunch will be provided.  A full equipment list will be provided with the Confirmation Package.   You'll also need a California Fishing License with a Steelhead Card as well.  Here a description from Lance's website:

The “Pontoon Workshop” is all about teaching fly anglers how to safely drift down rivers for greater access while fly-fishing. As always, we go above and beyond with the workshop curriculum.

The workshop covers water safety, reading water and route options, recognizing water hazards, forward and back rowing, pivoting, ferrying, and recommended equipment plus upgrades. The Pontoon Workshop ensures plenty of “on the water” learning time that will give our students the confidence needed for a safe and enjoyable drift down the river for future trips.

The Feather River is our venue for the workshop, which is nearly perfect for pontoon boat applications. We float the river from the Riverbend Parks to Oroville Afterbay Outlet Boat ramp, coaching each student on proper watercraft skills. Students gain the needed skill set and progression in their personal rowing skills to become more comfortable with their craft and overcome challenges while being assisted by seasoned oarsmen. During the second half of the float, participants will have the opportunity to fish select runs and learn even more with techniques and tactics of fly fishing on the Feather River. If you're looking to explore the journey of learning to drift moving water, this is the workshop for you.

All students must wear a PFD and Wading Belt to participate.

Feather River Pontoon Clinic- 10/26/24

The cost of the Clinic is $180 per person assuming we have 4 participants.  If we have a smaller group, the cost will be higher, $230 for three attendees, and $280 if only two attendees.  We are charging $180 now, but If we can't fill the four slots, you'll have the option closer to the clinic date to withdraw with a full TTFF credit or pay the higher amount.  Any tips to Lance can be made at your discretion.  Cancellations with a credit can be made up to September 15; after that date credits can be made only if your slot is taken by someone else.  If the Clinic fills and we have more interest from our members, we’ll see if we can arrange another Clinic at another time.  As always, the clinic is weather and condition dependent.   Thank you for your understanding, and enjoy this unique learning opportunity that can increase you ability to fish a number of our local waters.   If you have questions about registration, contact Tom Olinger (
