This is a one-day guide lead clinic on Pyramid Lake.  The objective is for participants to get a basic grounding to help them feel confident fishing Pyramid Lake on their own.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn to fish Pyramid for those who’ve never been there or have limited experience and would like to learn more.

The clinic will be led by Mike Curtis of Bucking Trout Outfitters.  Mike guides Pyramid frequently and is very knowledgeable about how to fish the lake.  The group will gather at 8:00 AM at the Pyramid Lake Lodge (formerly Crosby's) in Sutcliffe, NV at 8:00 AM on April 27.  After checking your tribal permit (required; can be purchased online) for fishing Pyramid, and brief introductions, Mike will provide a map and discuss the various access points for fishing Pyramid (you won’t actually go to most of these access points).  You’ll discuss fish behavior at the lake, how to locate fish, fishing in various seasons, gear and rigging, flies, presentation options, etc.  There will be a mid-day lunch break (lunch with be provided) then after lunch the group will go to a location of Mike’s choice where you will practice cast/strip and indicator fishing techniques for the lake.  You’ll fish with Mike coaching you until about 3:30-4:00 PM when the clinic will end.  While you will fish in the afternoon, and hopefully catch fish, the main focus of this clinic is learning how and where to fish the lake.

The cost of the clinic is $155/person exclusive of any tips which can be made at your discretion.  We need a minimum of three attendees to conduct this clinic, and there is a maximum of 5 attendees.  If we don’t have at least three attendees, the clinic will be rescheduled when more can attend or canceled and your payment will be refunded.  Your registration fee will be refundable only if there is someone to take your place.  If the weather is too bad, the clinic may need to be postponed or canceled.

The gear you will need to bring includes: a 7 or 8 weight fly rod (single or two handed), a reel with floating fly line and a fast sinking shooting head (300-375 grain) or full sinking fly line, leaders, ~12# tippet, a variety of indicators, split shot, waders/ wading boots, a large net, a 4-6' step ladder, warm clothing and hat, a notepad and pen for taking notes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and your usual tools/ fishing accessories.  You'll also need to provide your own flies which you can purchase on-line or at local fly shops that carry Pyramid fishing supplies.  Patterns that work well at pyramid include wooly buggers and wooly worms in sizes #4-8, balanced leeches/minnows in similar sizes, tui chub imitations, black and red midge pattens in sizes 8-12, popcorn beetles, etc.  Mike will provide handout material, lunch and drinks, and he will have a spare ladder and a backup fly rod or two.

This is a great opportunity to learn to fish one of the premier Stillwater fisheries in North America.  If you have any questions about registration, contact Tom Olinger at tompolinger@gmail.com.  If you have questions about the meeting time/location, gear to bring, etc., contact Mike Curtis directly at mike@buckingtrout.com, phone number 775.997.3673.  Thanks, and enjoy the clinic.
