Seriously though, the summer has been speeding by. The whole Tahoe/Truckee area seems to be setting records for visitors this summer. It is great to see so many folks enjoying our wonderful area and the local businesses can certainly use the influx of cash. Still, we get it all back to ourselves come Labor Day.
Somehow I missed the ‘Big bugs of June’ as Frank calls them and I finally got a few days out fishing, with very little success. Guess I’m just rusty. I’m looking forward to the Groupfish outings coming up and getting in more days on the water. Maybe some bass fishing, some carp fishing and some time on the river? Yep, that sounds good.
Our friends from the TU Chapter 103 are sponsoring an event to spread spawning gravel on the Little Truckee on Saturday, August 6. Meet at the upper parking area at 9:30 am. They will need some folks in the water and some hauling to the water. Refreshments from Sierra Nevada brewery will be available when the gravel has been spread. You can sign up for the event HERE.
Take a look at the great Groupfish and camping trips we have planned and of course, mark your calendars for the 32nd Annual BBQ and Fundraiser on August 13 at the Truckee River Regional Park/River Pavilion from 10:30 am to 4 pm. We have a super program planned with casting demonstrations by Jeff Putnam, John Marcacci tying flies, live music from Fire in the Kitchen, Chef Dillon’s fabulous grilled salmon and chicken, equipment from Adamsbuilt and over $5,000 in raffle prizes – rods, reels, chest/fanny packs, and much more. Of course the best part is just seeing all of your TTFF friends!

Milton Lake GroupFish, July 9
The club had a good day at Milton Reservoir on July 9 with results on the catching ranging from the skunk to 15 or so fish. The wind was blowing steady all day and the fish were feeding in tight to the bank. Milton is usually good through the summer as the water is very cold coming from the bottom of Jackson Meadows Reservoir just upstream. It is a pretty little lake with lots of smaller brown trout. There is camping available at Jackson Meadows or unimproved sites right at the lake at Milton. The road in is a little rough but there are always cars that make it with no problem.

TTFF Workshops
We tried a new feature this year by partnering with local guide and TTFF member, Jon Baiocchi, to put on 2 Moving Water Workshops on the North Fork of the Yuba River. Seven members participated and all reported excellent days of instruction and fishing with Jon. These were so successful that we are planning more workshops!
The first is a Pyramid Lake workshop with Rob Anderson. Those of you that attended the February meeting will recall Rob’s presentation on Pyramid – one of the best presentations we have had. He is one of the top guides out there. If the weather permits, this will be a float tube workshop. Using float tubes in October is the latest innovation on the big lake. Like everything at Pyramid, float tubing here is different than anything you have done before. The results can be double digit numbers and poundage! The takes can be spectacular. We will tie this in with our Groupfish/Camp October 7 to 9. The workshop will be on Friday, October 7. The cost is $125 pre-paid and will be limited to 10 people. Sign up HERE. We are also in discussion with Jon Baiocchi about 2 workshops for next year. The first will be a dry fly workshop on the Lower Yuba River. Jon is going to give us a presentation on dry fly fishing at our February 2017 meeting so this will be a tie in to that. Look for a sign up later this year. The second will be a Davis Lake workshop. Jon is the premier guide on Davis and he will share his incredible knowledge of the lake. Once again, keep an eye out for this outstanding workshop.
TTFF 32nd Annual BBQ and Fundraiser, August 13
The raffle items are showing up daily for the 32nd Annual BBQ and Fundraiser set for Saturday, August 13. We have a 5 weight BVK outfit from TFO – a perfect all-a-round outfit, a TFO Mangrove 8 weight rod – perfect for Pyramid Lake and saltwater fishing, an Orvis Mirage IV Large Arbor Reel – Orvis’ top of the line reel perfect for that 8 weight or any 7 to 9 weight, a beginner rod/reel from Cabela’s, an Orvis Clearwater 5 weight rod, Guide Days, Hand Tied Flies, a beautiful Fishpond net, chest and fanny packs and much more for over $5,000 worth of equipment and prizes.
Chef Paul Dillon is planning his outstanding grilled salmon and chicken lunch with sides, salads and dessert. Soft drinks included, BYOB adult beverages. Larry Heywood has arranged for Jeff Putnam, renown casting instructor, to give demonstrations on both single and two handed rods. Adamsbuilt, a fairly local manufacturer from Fallon, NV will be on site to show us their wares. John Marcacci has volunteered to demonstrate some fly tying techniques. We will be at the Truckee River Regional Park at the River Pavilion from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Please consider volunteering to help at the BBQ too.

Virginia Lakes Groupfish – Weekend of August 26
|
The club is returning to Virginia Lakes near Bridgeport, CA on the weekend of August 26.We had a large group last year and had a great time.There is camping in tents or RV/trailers as well as cabins for rent at Virginia Lakes Resort (cabin rentals are up to you to reserve).

Webber Lake Groupfish – Thursday, Sept 29

Please note that the date has been MOVED to Thursday, September 29 – please mark your calendars.This will be our last visit to Webber as a private facility.The Truckee Donner Land Trust is taking full possession of the lake January 1, 2017 and will open it to the public.The good news is that we will be able to go there anytime.The bad news is that they will not be putting in the $30,000 of large fish as the private lake had each year.

We will plan on a nice BBQ lunch as usual and will have K V Van Lom from the Land Trust tell us about the historic hotel and their plans for it in the coming years.

Pyramid Lake GroupFish/Camp – Oct 7 to 9
Pyramid Lake opens for the season on October 1. While the water is still a little warm, something special happens at this time of year – the Tui-chub school up just off of the beaches and the big Cutthroat charge the bait balls like tuna! Imagine sitting above one of these in your float tube and pulling a fly up through the bait ball . . . yea! We will select a beach to camp for the weekend or you could fish any day by making the drive. There is also an option to stay at Crosby’s lodge at the lake or perhaps in Sparks/Reno.

The first day will be either the Rob Anderson workshop or fishing with those that are not taking the workshop – see the topic of TTFF Workshops above.The other two days will be in one or more groups depending on the number of fishers and action on the beaches.
We need the wind to cooperate to use float tubes or pontoon boats.Last year a rain storm hit and the fishing was off the hook, so as long as the wind is low, we are go rain or shine.More details will follow.
The lake is on the Paiute Reservation and requires permits for fishing ($11/day) and camping as well as motorized boats (which is another option).No Nevada license is required.Click HERE to sign up.Click HERE to see who is going.

Advance Notice May 2017 GroupFish
The GroupFish to the Lower Sacramento River in April was so successful; we scheduled another one for next year with a new twist. We have arranged a special trip through Lance Gray & Company to rent the Digger Creek Ranch (http://diggercreekranch.com/) for the trout opener on April 30 and May 1. This property is located near Manton, CA. It has 3 stocked lakes and a short section of Digger Creek to fish. The house has four bedrooms and 5 baths and sleeps 8. There is a full kitchen. We can also accommodate a few campers with up to 8 additional anglers. Then on May 2, we have 5 drift boats reserved with Lance and his crew on the Lower Sacramento. The costs for the trip are as follows: (fishing and accomodations).
Digger Creek House (up to 8 anglers in 4 rooms) $160 per night
Digger Creek Camping (up to 8 anglers in campers) $125 per night
Lower Sac Float (May 2) up to 10 anglers $425 per boat/$212.50 per angler
Conservation Corner – Orvis Grant to TRWC

Earlier this spring, Angela Robles Coffman, Manager of the Reno Orvis store, contacted the club about a conservation grant program sponsored by Orvis Corporate.They were looking for a local opportunity to help a non-profit doing environmental work that would help our trout population.
Dick Gander, TTFF President, connected Angela to the Truckee River Watershed Council (TRWC) and they described their “First 4 Miles Project” to be implemented later this fall.This project will improve the Truckee River from the dam to Alpine Meadows road.They will stabilize the banks, correct old issues, install trout habitat (in partnership with TU Chapter 103) and improve ingress/egress from the river.Look for the work this September.
Angela submitted the project and Orvis Corporate agreed to a $3,000 grant!This was a great win-win for our top sponsor, the local Orvis store; the Watershed Council and the Truckee River!
